First Impresssions

Once I worked out how to get off of help island ( the starting point), I soon realised the size of Second Life. it's a big place. now to work out what people actually spend their time doing in there!

  1. Yes it's definitely easy to feel a bit directionless. Especially if there is no-one else around at the time! I've just been having a look at EDTECH Island - I think it's built by Boise University. Some good tutorials there. http://slurl.com/secondlife/EdTech/218/56/25. Check out the Sistine Chapel by Vassar College - very clever! Like being there! http://slurl.com/secondlife/vassar/165/91/24

  2. I enjoyed making Lucille Lemondrop and she is an adventuous little avatar! Lucille has spent a bit of time checking out various venues. She first found herself in a dance venue which looked like fun except Lucille couldn't figure out how to dance. However on a closer inspection she noticed various bedroom venues were a part of the place and so she quicly managed to teleport out of there! Next she decided to visit an educational venue and after typing "education" in to the search facility happened upon the Happy Hipster site. There I met another avatar called Ty. Ty welcomed me and also helped me to make adjustments to my computer settings to help Lucille move more easily (she was getting stuck. Ty told me that
the HH group was a good one to learn things from such as how to build in second life, so I jined up.
it is a slow process for me to figure out what SL is all about and what it can be used for. it seems that Ty and his girlfriend avatar can have sex using SL, ( go figure) they also play a vampire game which sounds to freaky for me. Ty's girlfriend Alisha gave me a garlic necklace to protect me from other vampire avatars and I managed to wear it.
I was starting to wonder what we were getting into! Is this what we want to be introducing our youth leaders to? How can we isolate the useful bits and keep out the weird bits?
I have managed to visit some really nice places, Koinonia church, an authodox church, an enchanted garden, underwater diving, complete with fish and sea creatures.I love flying as an avatar, that is really exhilerating. I cant say I have met many like minded avatars, the places I look at are often deserted. I did meet one friendly avatar who showed me her gallery whe had made with picutes, photos and light sculptures.
I think we have a lot of work to do figuring out how we can use this amazing technology and also how to make what we do come up with effective.
Still I always enjoy learning something new, but am worried that I am out of my depth! I am glad I have som fellow project workers to explore with!!

  3. Thanks for the update Meg! Underwater diving! You'll have to show me that one! Yes - it does seem to make a difference being online during the night while the rest of the world are still awake! A lot more people around in SL. I wonder how many Australian's (or at least people in our time zone anyway!!) use SL. Think I might look that up!
